The Institute for the History of Frankfurt is one of the most important municipal archives in Germany and one of the oldest cultural institutions in Frankfurt.
It has been preserving the city’s historical legacy since 1436 and presents aspects of Frankfurt’s municipal history in changing exhibitions, as well as lectures, guided tours, and other event formats. The museum staff is happy to provide information and advice for visitors interested in history and researchers! You can also view records, documents, maps, and townscapes in the reading room. In this way the institute contributes to shaping the city’s historical identity.
The institute is based in the Carmelite Monastery, Frankfurt’s only Medieval monastery complex to boast Jörg Rathgeb’s pre-Baroque mural paintings.
