What is life like when freedom and self-determination are your greatest assets, when the present looms so large that past and future become secondary, and music and magic are ubiquitous?
The largest minority in Europe are Sinti and Roma. Although they have shaped European culture for centuries, there is little knowledge about them and their history. Racist stereotypes inform perceptions and determine policies towards this minority.
Amie Barouh (b. 1993) creates equally gentle and brutal, magical and realistic depictions of the different realities of Roma life in Paris in her films. Places that are overlooked and are therefore rendered invisible are brought to the fore as living spaces. A permanent presence of violence is interrupted time and again by a playful, melodious lightness and full emotions. Facing the steady draw of great adventures and a life outside regulated existence, they constantly strive for the magic of bliss.
Entre-Sorts is Amie Barouh’s first institutional solo exhibition worldwide.
