In the beginning there was... Jikji. Korea's big bang of printing history
A groundbreaking invention of humanity actually originated in Korea. The Book of Jikji is the oldest book printed with movable characters cast in metal. It was written in Cheongju, Korea, in 1377, more than 50 years before the Gutenberg Bible. The Book of Jikji contains a collection of Buddhist texts. Only a single copy has survived, it is kept in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. Only in recent years has a team of Korean researchers been allowed to carry out further research into the material nature of the book. These are incorporated into the exhibition that the Early Printing Museum in Cheongju (South Korea) has now developed and is giving to the Klingspor Museum for presentation. The museum at the place where Jikji was created is dedicated to the research and dissemination of early Korean printing.
